masonry mortar is used to bond various types of bricks: red clay bricks with low water absorption, lime sand bricks with strong water absorption and aerated lightweight concrete. generally speaking, bricks with low water absorption require a thick coat of mortar with low water retention, while smooth, flat bricks with high water absorption require a thin coat of mortar with high water retention. din 18555part 1-9 describes the inorganic test methods for binder mortars. most of them are suitable for use in masonry mortars as well as cement-based renders and gypsum-based mortars.
